Advanced presentation skills for Biochemistry researchers

The following training session is offered to Biochemistry doctoral students, and is also suitable for Biology students, and any Psychology students who have a strong biographical element to their research.  There is a strict limit of 12 participants, so please book early to avoid disappointment.

Learn how to hone your presentation skills and deliver your research results expertly

This is a two-session course  aimed at doctoral researchers in Biochemistry.  The sessions cover advanced presentation skills, so participants should already have some experience of presenting their research to others, and will have some pre-prepared slides available for review at the first session. The sessions will be facilitated by Ms Amelia Philpot.

In the first session we will discuss generic presenting skills such as body language, voice control, slide development; how to give a comprehensive but concise introduction to your subject, and to present complex results in a coherent manner.  We will look at some good vs bad presentation examples (and discuss the reasons why).  You will learn some tips for tailoring your presentation for your audience (e.g.  research team, colloquia, conference) and take part in a Q & A session.  Finally, all attendees will receive feedback on slides they have brought along, resulting in an action plan for improvement before the second session.

In the second session, each participant will have made improvements to their slides using the advice and action plan generated from Session 1, and will deliver a short (maximum 10 minute) presentation, which is filmed.  Participants also contribute to, and receive verbal feedback from facilitator and peers.

After the course, each film will be uploaded to the Study Direct site and made available only to the presenter, not other participants.  Comprehensive and constructive feedback from the facilitator will accompany the film for uploading.

As this is a higher-level skills course, and in order to ensure participants get the most out of this opportunity, participants are expected to be committed to attending both sessions, and to providing some of their own slides for discussion.

SESSION 1: Tuesday 20th  July 10.00-12.00 in Bramber House room 254.

SESSION 2: Friday 23rd July 10.00-12.00 in Bramber House room 231
