Whatever stage you are at in your research journey, it is never too soon to think about the copyright implications of including third party material in your doctoral thesis. Now that it is a requirement to submit an electronic version of your thesis (to be made openly available on Sussex Research Online) you may need to seek permission from the copyright owner to include images, film stills, photographs or substantial extracts from literary works. If you are not sure whether you can include third party content in your thesis without first seeking permission from the rights holder, drop in to the Research Hive on Wednesday 19th June, anytime between 2.00 and 4.00 pm to discuss with Library staff.

The programme is bursting at the seams with interdisciplinary expertise on engagement and social sensing – human or machine.

The morning session starts with Fabian Ramseyer from Bern, who will talk about interactional synchrony when people are in rapport with each other. Colin Nightingale from immersive theatre company Punchdrunk – who are opening a major new London production next week – follows. Colin will talk about how Punchdrunk thinks and works with engagement.

Next, Steve Benford from Nottingham Mixed Reality Lab will talk about trajectories through engagement, followed by Tassos Stevens from Agency of Coney, the maker behind Papa Sangre, the sound-only navigation iPhone game. More science follows with Hugo Critchley from BSMS, who will talk about reciprocity and embodiment in social and emotional interactions from the perspective of neuroscience.

To round the morning session off, Effie Lai-Chong Law from Leicester, Judith Good from University of Sussex, and Alessandro Vinciarelli from Edinburgh will talk about perspectives on the quantification of user experience, engagement in HCI within a social context, and social signal processing, respectively.

After lunch, Anthony Churnside from the BBC, Nick Medford from BSMS, and Carina Westling from MFM/Sussex will talk about sound object research, the neurobiology of engagement, and cross-platform narratives. Parallel with this first part of the afternoon session, there will be a workshop with funding experts from EPSRC and AHRC, to facilitate development of interdisciplinary collaboration.

The afternoon will finish with sessions by DK Arvind from Edinburgh on motion capture with speckled computing, Anna Cox from UCL on immersion in computer games, and Jonathan Freeman from Goldsmiths on humans as the sensors in the machine.

It is a rare opportunity to participate in a truly interdisciplinary discussion about engagement and social sensing; what engagement is, how it is engendered, and how we assess and participate in engagement. Don’t miss it!

Peer Review: The Nuts and Bolts is a free half-day workshop for early career researchers and will explore how peer review works, how to get involved, the challenges to the system, and the role of peer review in helping the public to evaluate research claims.

Should peer review detect plagiarism, bias or fraud? What does peer review do for science and what does the scientific community want it to do for them? Should reviewers remain anonymous? Does it illuminate good ideas or shut them down?

 The project will provide individually-tailored training that addresses the challenges of sharing archival material with non-specialist audiences. Training will be delivered by public, private and third sector partners via a workshop event at UEA London on 1-2 November 2013 and an online mentorship network.

 After the Archive is funded by the AHRC and managed by an interdisciplinary committee of UEA and UoS PhD students on behalf of CHASE.

Led by Sally Jane Norman, Professor of Performance Technologies (Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts) who regularly assesses and supervises practice PhDs, together with creative practitioner Doctor John Ferguson (Kingston University), the workshop will offer practical pointers and suggestions, and above all an open forum to discuss your questions.

There are no generic answers, but formulating key concerns can provide useful insights.

• How do you go about writing a thesis when your research is practice-based/led/informed?
• How can you optimise the time you spend on the writing and practice components of your PhD?
• How can you ensure that the thesis format and structure are in line with an officially allocated “practice percentage”?

Humanities in Human Rights is designed for postgraduate and early career researchers in the arts, humanities and social sciences who are committed to understanding the politics of humanity and human rights today.

Funded by the AHRC, led by Prof. Lyndsey Stonebridge (UEA) and Prof. Les Back (Goldsmiths) the programme opens in October 2013 with a residential weekend taught by CHASE faculty, followed by topic specific work-shops and a showcase of research in London.
