Alumni Masterclass: Development/Charities

Wednesday, 5 May 2010 ~  Time: 15:00 – 16:30 ~ Location: Conference Centre, Bramber House ~ Speakers David Bull and Geoffrey Dennis

David Bull joined UNICEF UK as Executive Director in 1999. Since then the organisation has more than doubled its income and the charity has positioned itself as an advocate for the world’s children through a series of campaigns focusing on maternal health, poverty, conflict, exploitation and HIV Aids. David’s previous roles include Director of Amnesty International’s UK section and Public Affairs Officer at Oxfam.

Geoffrey Dennis has been Chief Executive at CARE International since 2004. He previously worked as Chief Executive of Friends of the Elderly, International Director at the British Red Cross and the International Federation of the Red Cross (IFRC). He came to the charity sector after a first career working on development issues in the development sector.

Alumni Masterclass: International Careers

Thursday, 13 May 2010 ~ Time: 14:00 – 16:00 ~ Location: Conference Centre, Bramber House ~ Speakers Jamie Shea and Jonathan Faull

Jamie Shea is Directory of Policy Planning in the Private Office of the Secretary General. Responsible for advising senior NATO management and the North Atlantic Council, Jamie has also worked in speech writing, ghostwriting of articles, press releases, book chapters and official communiques and as Head of External Relations.

Jonathan Faull has been Director of the European Commission’s Justice, Freedom and Security department since 2003. He has worked in the European Commission since 1978, first as an administrator and then principal administrator. He was assistant to the Director General for Competition and worked in the Cabinet of Sir Leon Brittan, Vice-President of the European Commission.

Alumni Masterclass: Science

Wednesday, 26 May 2010 ~ Time: 15:00 – 18:00 ~ Location: Fulton Building ~ Speakers: Professor Adrian Bird FRS CBE; Professor Sir Peter Knight FRS; Professor Georgina Mace FRS CBE

Director of the Wellcome Trust Centre for Cell Biology at the University of Edinburgh, Professor Bird is a member of the editorial board of ‘Molecular Cell’. His awards include the Louis-Jeantet Prize for Medicine and the Charles Léopold Mayer Prize of the French Academy of Sciences.

Professor Sir Peter Knight is Deputy Rector (Research) at Imperial College and Professor of Quantum Optics. He was knighted in 2005 for his work in optical physics. Sir Peter is also chair of the Defence Scientific Advisory Council at the UK Ministry of Defence.

Professor Georgina Mace is Director of the National Environment Research Council Centre for population biology at Imperial College London and is a Trustee of the Natural History Museum. Professor Mace has also worked as Director of Science at the Zoological Society of London.
