Researcher Careers

The pathways are various and routes forward are complex, but building a career around a doctorate is an exciting journey.  Let us help you develop your thinking, review what you’re really looking for, assess the reality of labour markets and perhaps make some decisions. There are three group sessions for you this term in the Careers and Employability Centre to cover different stages of your career development.

Career Exploration for doctoral researchers and research staff

Monday 18 October, 12 noon – 1.30pm

Review how you have come to be in your current position and consider what direction you might want to travel in.   Assess the pros and cons of different options and identify actions that will be helpful to progress your career.  Learn about other support available to you too.  (Led by Catherine Reynolds)

CVs and Written Applications for doctoral researchers and research staff

Tuesday 26 October, 10.30am – 12 noon

Evaluate the broad range of skills, qualities and experiences that you have to offer to potential employers and learn ways to express this in writing to impress.  We can help you find ways to shift your identity to match expectations for a variety of roles in a variety of sectors.   Academic CVs are different from those required in other sectors.  Come and learn how to present yourself effectively in our a supportive and encouraging environment – other people have to learn it through job rejections – ouch!  (Led by Jane Riley)

Interview Preparation for doctoral researchers and research staff

Tuesday 26 October, 2.30 – 4pm

Not a skill you want to practise in front of a real selection panel!  This session will cover the background to selection interviewing, the types of activities common in academic and other selection processes and give you some feedback on ways to talk about yourself in the artificial environment of the interview room.  (Led by Catherine Reynolds)

All sessions can be booked at:

You are very welcome to join us for other events throughout the year too, check out the current list on the same page.

We also offer one to one career support, either daily for short sessions in the Information Centre or more in depth consultations with Jane Riley or Catherine Reynolds, contact us by email to book one of these.  We’re looking forward to meeting you and supporting your career development.
